Bring your prescription

Yes, you can bring a glasses prescription from any eye doctor. If it is current and complete, we can make your glasses from it without an exam here. We take the fitting measurements in the frame you choose, so the lenses are centered for your eyes.

What to bring

  • The written prescription, or a clear photo or copy of it
  • Your current glasses, so we can compare the new lenses with what you are used to
  • Your vision insurance card, if you want to use your eyewear allowance

What makes a prescription usable

A glasses prescription should show your name, the date of the exam, the prescriber's name and contact details, and the lens powers for each eye. In Michigan a glasses prescription is valid for at least one year unless the doctor recorded a medical reason for a shorter period. If yours has expired, the details are unclear, or the numbers do not match how you see, we will tell you before you order. You can book an exam here if you need a new one.

Why we measure you in the new frame

Pupil distance and, for progressives and bifocals, fitting height depend on the frame you choose and how it sits on your face. Pupil distance is not a required part of a prescription, so many prescriptions do not include it. Taking these measurements ourselves is part of making glasses that work.

Contact lens prescriptions are different

A contact lens prescription includes the lens brand, size and curve, and it cannot be used to make glasses. A glasses prescription cannot be used to order contact lenses. If you want contacts, book a contact lens exam.

Questions

Do I need an eye exam here to buy glasses?

No. If your glasses prescription is current and complete, we can make glasses from it.

Can you read my prescription from a photo?

Usually, as long as it is clear and shows the doctor's details and the exam date. We may contact the prescriber's office to confirm anything that is hard to read.

My prescription is from out of state. Is that okay?

Bring it in and we will look at it with you. If anything is missing or expired, we will explain your options.
