Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about booking, exams, glasses, insurance and visiting the office. If your question is not here, send it to us and we will reply during office hours.

Eyewear

Do I need an appointment to look at frames?

No appointment is needed to browse during opening hours. If you want an optician's undivided time, for example for progressive lenses or a child's first glasses, ask for a fitting appointment.

Brands we carry

Can I bring a prescription from another eye doctor?

Yes. If your glasses prescription is current and complete, we can make glasses from it. Bring the written prescription, and we will take the fitting measurements in the frame you choose.

Bringing your prescription

How long do new glasses take?

It depends on the lenses. Most prescriptions need to be made by a lab, and progressives and special lenses take longer. We give you an expected pickup date when you order, and contact you when your glasses are ready.

Can you adjust my glasses?

Yes, we adjust glasses bought at Lens Society. Our adjustment and repair policy, including glasses bought elsewhere, will be posted here once it is final.

Contact lenses

Why is a contact lens exam separate from an eye exam?

A contact lens sits directly on your eye, so the doctor measures your eye's surface, chooses a lens, and checks how it fits and moves. That fitting is what produces a contact lens prescription, which is different from a glasses prescription.

Contact lens exams

Insurance and payment

Do you take my insurance?

We accept VSP, Davis Vision, Spectera, EyeMed, Medicare, Michigan Medicaid, HAP, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network, and Priority Health. The insurance page lists each one. Vision plans and medical insurance cover different things, so tell us your carrier and we will help you understand your benefits before you order.

Insurance and pricing

What is the difference between vision and medical insurance?

Vision plans usually cover a routine eye exam and an allowance toward glasses or contacts. Medical insurance covers visits for eye problems such as infections, injuries or eye disease, and usually does not pay for glasses. The reason for your visit decides which one applies.

Read the guide

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Eye exams, prescription glasses, contact lenses and contact lens solution are generally qualified medical expenses under IRS rules. Check with your plan administrator for your account's specific rules, and ask us for an itemized receipt.

Kids

What age do you see children?

We see children from age 3, with a parent or guardian at the visit. For younger children, start with your pediatrician, who can refer you to an eye doctor who sees infants and toddlers.

Eye exams

What should I bring to my eye exam?

Your current glasses and contact lenses or lens box, your vision and medical insurance cards, a photo ID, and a list of medications. If your eyes may be dilated, bring sunglasses.

What to bring

Will I get a copy of my glasses prescription?

Yes. You receive your eyeglass prescription at the end of your exam, at no extra charge, and you can fill it anywhere.

What should I do about an urgent eye problem?

Sudden vision loss, a curtain or shadow over your vision, a chemical splash, an eye injury, or severe eye pain need care right away. Call 911 or go to an emergency department. Do not use our online request form for urgent problems.
