How we check your benefits

A vision plan usually covers a routine eye exam and an allowance toward glasses or contact lenses. Medical insurance covers visits for eye problems, such as red or painful eyes, infections, injuries, or monitoring a condition like diabetes or glaucoma, and it usually does not pay for glasses. Some visits start as one kind and become the other, for example when a routine exam finds a problem that needs follow-up. If that happens, we will explain how it may be billed before we go further.

Vision plans and medical insurance, explained

  1. Tell us your carrier

When you request a visit, you can add your insurance carrier's name. Please do not send member ID numbers, dates of birth, or card photos through the website.

  2. We confirm the details with you

Before your visit, our staff will ask for the information the plan needs, by phone or at the office, and check your eligibility and benefits with the plan.

  3. We explain what is covered

You will hear what your plan is expected to cover and what you may owe before services are provided or eyewear is ordered.

  4. Your plan makes the final decision

A benefit check is an estimate based on what the plan tells us. The plan decides what it pays when the claim is processed.

If your plan is not listed

Ask us even if your plan is not listed, because many plans are offered under another company's name. If we are not in your plan's network, you can still choose to pay yourself, and some plans reimburse part of the cost for out-of-network care. Check with your plan about out-of-network benefits and what paperwork they need.

Using an HSA or FSA

Under IRS rules, eye exams, prescription glasses, contact lenses and contact lens solution are generally qualified medical expenses for a health savings account or flexible spending account. Your account administrator sets the specific rules for your account, so check with them if you are unsure. Ask us for an itemized receipt.
